A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and when they link together in small groups they form peptides. Think of protein as a long novel. A peptide is a single sentence.
Your body produces peptides naturally and constantly. They act as signaling molecules, carrying messages between cells and telling your body what to do. Grow this tissue. Repair that wound. Release this hormone. Regulate that inflammation. Peptides are essentially your body’s internal communication system.
The ones generating the most attention in wellness and longevity circles are either synthetic versions of peptides your body already makes, or compounds that mimic signals your body sends naturally. The logic is straightforward: if your body’s own peptide production declines with age, or if you want to amplify a specific signal, targeted peptide protocols may help.
Some peptides are available as mainstream supplements you can find anywhere. Collagen peptides are the most familiar example. Others are available through licensed practitioners. GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone your gut produces every time you eat, especially when you eat fiber, protein, and healthy fats. It slows digestion, signals fullness to your brain, and helps regulate blood sugar. The medications built around this pathway, semaglutide and tirzepatide among them, are peptides designed to mimic and amplify a signal your body already makes on its own.
Insulin is also a peptide. Discovered in 1921 and one of the first peptides ever used medically, insulin is produced by your pancreas and is essential for moving glucose out of your bloodstream and into your cells for energy. Every person with Type 1 diabetes, and many with Type 2, depend on this peptide daily, whether from their own pancreas or through injection.
